Holy Week Reading | Day 4
Foolish Things
Mark 15:21-32
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. (Matthew 2:11)
And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him,
All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; (Psalms 22:7)
I am an object of scorn to my accusers;
when they see me, they wag their heads. (Psalms 109:25)“Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?
Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow,
which was brought upon me,
which the LORD inflicted
on the day of his fierce anger.
(Lamentations 1:12)
wagging their heads and saying, “Aha!
Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!” (Psalm 40:15)
You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!”
Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." (John 2:19)
So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.
Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” (Matthew 26:53-54)
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:18)
Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.”
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)
Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not theChrist? Save yourself and us!” But others rebuked him saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:39-41)
If this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God! (Acts 5:38-39)
Just foolish things shaming the wise.
